A number of Spurs players were linked with leaving the club this summer, but most ended up staying in north London. The saga behind the intent of any player quest for leaving a club,  even though he has a loud ovation there to enjoy,  is definitely not unconnected to the bid on combing for a greener pastures,  which is a normal prerogative of everybody.

Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose were the two most strongly connected to moves away, with Manchester United big fans of the Belgium centre-back and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested in a loan deal for the Englishman.

However, both stayed and both started for Spurs as they put Manchester United to the sword in a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford last week.

Midfielder Mousa Dembele, who is in the final year of his contract, was also claimed to be on his way out, but remains in the Tottenham squad – he played the full 90 minutes against United.

With the summer transfer window now well and truly closed, that trio – as well as any other player looking to leave, like striker Vincent Janssen, who hasn’t even been issued with a squad number as he recovers from foot surgery, winger Georges-Kévin N’Koudou and frontman Fernando Llorente – will have to wait until at least January if they want their move.

And Pochettino has made it clear he will not beg any of his players to stay, insisted they have plenty of talented youngsters in their academy to fill any wantaway star’s place.

“I am not a person who is going to convince players to stay or not stay,” said Pochettino on Friday ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Watford.

“If they want to leave, they want to leave. The players who don’t want to stay can leave. I’m not going to convince people to stay who don’t want to.

“It’s not a problem if we lose one or two or three. Because we have plenty of players in the academy, no problem.

“I am more than happy to keep all the players and I am more than happy if they leave, and we play with the under-23s. It’s not a problem, I promise you. Not a problem for me.”
