06:42, August 6th, 2018. In the search for center back defender,  Manchester United looks to make a u-turn from the pursuit of Maguire to another great talent.

'Difficult' was the word Jose Mourinho used to describe the now plausible scenario of United not signing another player before the transfer window closes on Thursday.

It was the final roll of the dice from the United boss ahead of his side's final pre-season clash with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

With no post-match press conference planned, and Mourinho not due to face the media again until deadline day itself, the 55-year-old did not hold back in sending one final summer message to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward .

But his case may have been weakened a little. Rather than stick towering midfielder Scott McTominay in defence, as he did on one occasion in the US to prove his point, Mourinho threw Victor Lindelof in for his first United game of the summer.

Those words 'Lindelof + threw + in' once sent shivers down United fans' backs - who can forget the Swede's horror show when parachuted in at Huddersfield in October? - but this was a significant night for the defender.

You might not recognise that Lindelof; he had a shaved head and had the fearlessness of a youngster who had nothing to lose on the big stage.

We did not quite see that on Sunday night, but it felt like a significant moment as far as pre-season friendlies go. For the first time since September, when they played in a back three together, Lindelof and Eric Bailly were in the same back line.

More strikingly, for the first time ever, they were paired together in a two-man central defence. You do have to wonder what took Mourinho so long.
